Scanning the Skies

When I was a little girl, Christmas was a big deal.  I couldn’t wait to see what kind of horse Santa would bring me, because I was always sure that THIS year, he was going to bring me one as I had asked.  On Christmas Eve, we would get in the old Chrysler and drive from our home outside Atlanta to my grandparents’ house in southwest Georgia to start the celebration.  That was always fun, but on the way back home, I would scan the skies.  Reports were coming over the radio that Santa was getting close to Georgia, so I would be looking everywhere for a sleigh and eight tiny reindeer making their way across the skies.  On cloudy nights, I just looked for the glow of Rudolph’s nose.  🙂  Want to know a secret?  The truth is, that even all these years later, I’ll still look up to the skies to see if reindeer really know how to fly.

Over 2,000 years ago, there were three men who scanned the skies also.  They noticed the appearance of a bright star and they followed it from the east.  They knew it foretold the birth of the King of the Jews and they came to worship Him.  (Matthew 2:1-2)  Their journey was dangerous and likely took two years to complete.  The star guided their journey until it came to rest over the place where Jesus was found.  The Magi offered Him gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh – the very best gifts that they could offer Him.

Today is Christmas Eve and the skies are clear tonight.  I’ll be scanning the skies again tonight, but this time I’ll be watching for a Christmas star so that I too may worship Him and offer Him my very best.

Have a very Merry Christmas!
